This section of the interview was very enlightening. KS discusses playing to an audience and I’d like to add that finding an audience can be a natural jumping-off point for a creative enterprise, even if it isn’t the most artistic activity.

Loved what KS had to say about going to the movies. Aside from the expense, it is now hard work. You compete with ingoing/outgoing traffic for a parking space. Theatres aren’t designed for comfort, but, like the economy seats in airplanes, for utility. There is the unsettling disembodied voice that admonishes against unacceptable behaviors. Do arteries hardening have a smell? Yes, and it’s coming from the guy who has squished down next to you with a massive tub of extra-butter popcorn.

There are lines for the restrooms and the air conditioning is polar; even (or especially) in Florida one needs a sweater and perhaps a scarf. IMAX is nothing but a modern Tilt-a-Whirl; screens are disproportionate to the rake/size of the theatre.

And you can forget about groping in the balcony. Not only are there no longer balconies, but groping was outlawed by national decree in 1989. It is one of the most unlawful acts you can commit in a movie theatre, along with putting arms on both armrests.

It is more important than ever that the product deliver–that the movie is good, because the experience sure isn’t.
