Burning Man Burns, Man Arrested, Then It’s Fixed So It Can Burn Again. Man!

Some dude burned the man at Burning Man early.

The man suspected of setting the Man alight — performance artist Paul Addis, 35, of San Francisco — was released on bail Tuesday after being arrested on suspicion of arson, illegal possession of fireworks, destruction of property and resisting a public officer, according to a Pershing County Sheriff’s Department dispatcher.

While some have praised the unscheduled burn as a return to the gathering’s anarchic roots, burners on hand for the Man’s resurrection seemed unimpressed with the actions of the alleged arsonist.

“Stupid” was the reaction from Dennis Carlsen, a 51-year-old burner from Victoria, British Columbia. “Who knows why (he did it).”

“(He’s) probably just psychotic,” said Dan Sandberg, 30, of San Francisco. “If you’re willing to go to jail for a few years for burning something, you’re pretty much psychotic.”

Here are my pictures from Burning Man, 1997 - ten whole years ago. Today when people hear I went to the 1997 burn, everyone says Burning Man isn’t cool the way it used to be but guess what? They said the same thing ten years ago, too. I had fun. One thing I remember is that I didn’t know Princess Diana had died until days after it happened because Burning Man is sort of a closed system and that information didn’t make it’s way in.

Those Radical Judges In..Ummm..Iowa

Another irony to the Craig scandal; Iowa court upholds equal protection under the law and supports same sex marriage, just like Dick Cheney does.

An Iowa district court ruled Thursday that same-sex couples can marry based on the state constitution’s guarantee of equal treatment, court documents show.art.

An Iowa district judge ruled in favor of same-sex marriage. The ruling was in response to a December 2005 lawsuit brought by six same-sex couples seeking to wed. They were denied marriage licenses and claimed such treatment violates equal-protection and due-process clauses in the Iowa constitution. The court also struck down a state law declaring valid marriages are only between a man and woman.
