Marianna, Arkansas is small town an hour’s drive from Memphis, TN.
It’s the home of Jones BBQ Diner, a wonderful and down-home little place that won a James Beard award. It’s owned by a couple named James and Betty Jones. Here’s a little video someone made about it.
(Billions of your tax dollars have been wasted. You might as well make your mouth water.)
When I visited Marianna a few months ago, I ate at Jones. The menu is very small; pork sandwiches. That’s about it. Absolutely incredible. If you’re a BBQ fan, make the pilgrimage.
But Jones BBQ Diner isn’t all that Marianna should be noted for.
Marianna is the town with the largest number of Pigford II claims.
Here’s the math: as of the census of 2010, there were 4,115 people in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 76.6% Black or African American. That comes out to 3153 black residents; men, women and children.
And according to the list of Pigford II late filers, Marianna has 1326 claims. Close to half the residents seem to have claimed under penalty of perjury that they attempted to farm but were turned down by the USDA for farm loan services.
That’s over sixty-six million in claims for Marianna. $66,300,000 to be exact.
Oh, and some bad news.
James and Betty Jones, the owners of Jones BBQ Diner, are appeared to be on the list of Pigford II claimants. A James and Betty Jones list the same Marianna P.O. Box as address.
I hope they really farmed. That pork sandwich was amazing.
Over a billion dollars in Pigford II check went out a couple of weeks ago to 18,000. We have no idea who got them.
